A deadline can leave you dead in the water

Ex-colleague PIET COETZER writes a regular column, Final word, on the origin of words for the magazine Leadership’s electronic Intelligence Bulletin. Finding some interesting facts on the origin of the word “deadline” that may satisfy the curiosity of K’rant readers, he made the column for the next issue available to K’rant as well.

He writes: Meeting or making “deadlines” has become an integral part of modern life, something that we are constantly chasing; from meeting the deadline for the submission of our tax returns to submitting an application for this or that. And the expression started off as (literally) a deadly serious matter.
